Terms of Use
Updated 4 November 2026
These are the rules for being a member of Except. They are written to be read. By applying for membership, or by using the app, you agree to them.
1. Who we are
Except is a private, application-only members’ club, run as an app. In these terms, “we”, “us” and “Except” mean [LEGAL NAME OF THE COMPANY OR PERSON RUNNING EXCEPT], of [REGISTERED ADDRESS]. You can reach us at hello@exceptclub.com.
2. Membership
You join by applying. Every application is read by a person, and we may accept or decline it without giving a reason. A host’s invite code can let you in without waiting.
You must be at least 16 years old. Give us honest information about who you are, keep it up to date, and keep only one account.
3. Your account
You sign in with a one-time code sent to your email address, so keep your email account secure. You are responsible for what happens under your account. Tell us at once if you think someone else has got into it.
4. What you share
What you post stays yours. By posting it, you give us a licence to store it and to show it to other members in the ways the app is built to, such as in feeds, spaces and messages, and according to the privacy choices you make. The licence ends when you delete the content or your account, apart from copies other members have already made in the ordinary use of the app.
You are responsible for what you share. Only share things you have the right to share, and never share another person’s private information without their permission. What is said in private spaces and in messages is meant to stay there.
5. How we behave here
Except is a place for people to meet and talk well. You must not:
- harass, threaten, abuse or discriminate against anyone;
- post anything unlawful, hateful, violent, or sexually explicit, or anything that sexualises or endangers a child. We will report the latter to the authorities;
- pretend to be someone else, or mislead people about who you are;
- send spam, advertise without permission, or run scams;
- collect information about members in bulk, or use the app to build a list or to train other systems;
- try to break, overload or get around the security of the app.
6. Reporting, blocking and our response
You can report a post, comment, message, space post or member from the app, and you can block any member. Blocking works both ways: neither of you can see the other’s posts or messages, message each other, or follow each other.
We review every report, and we aim to act on it within 24 hours. We may remove content, warn a member, suspend them, or remove their account, and we may do so without notice where the breach is serious. If we remove your account, you can ask us to look at the decision again by writing to hello@exceptclub.com.
7. Spaces
Spaces are run by their hosts and managers, who decide who may join and can remove members and posts from their space. Hosts and managers must follow these terms like everyone else. Except may step in where a space is being used to break them.
8. Events and meeting in person
Events in the app are organised by members, not by Except, unless an event says otherwise. Use your own judgement when you meet people in person, and take the care you would take anywhere else. We are not responsible for what happens at events we do not run.
9. Leaving
You can delete your account at any time, in Settings, under Delete account. This removes your profile and what you have shared, and it cannot be undone. We may suspend or end your membership if you break these terms, and when we remove someone, what they posted stops showing to other members. If you gave us false information to join, or to open a space, we may remove you and the people you brought in with that space.
10. Our work
The app, its design, its name and its content (other than what members post) belong to us or our licensors. You may use them to take part in Except, and not otherwise.
11. Our responsibility
We work hard to keep Except running, but we provide it as it is and we cannot promise it will always be available or free of mistakes. Nothing in these terms limits any right you have by law, or our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law does not allow us to limit. Subject to that, we are not liable for loss that was not a foreseeable result of our breach, or for what members say or do.
12. Changes
We may change these terms, and when we do we will tell members in the app before the change takes effect. If you keep using Except after that, you accept the new terms. If you do not agree, you can delete your account.
13. The law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and its courts will decide any dispute, unless the law of the place where you live gives you the right to go to court there.
